20 JAN 2007 some philosophy

This link (map of the route, link at the right hand side in this blog) shows the general plan for the walk, a map of the route, and a bit of philosophy.

I generally do not support the use of eminent domain to purchase battlefield land. First, the system was used in creating the Shenandoah National Park. It is liable to abuse by the various levels of government, and, if resorted to, may induce land owners to quickly develop the battlefield land before eminent domain can be applied.

The better way is to purchase the land through the open market. This could be through outright purchase, or through the purchase of easements, to protect the land while funding is procured.

Here is a sample photo of the battlefield outside Harrisonburg, Virginia, where Ashby fell.  This is the type of thing I am trying to prevent.
The actual site of Ashby's death is in the woodline behind the bulldozers.
