10 May 2007 called "Highland County"

Highland County
Had a rough day on May 8th, crossing three mountains: Shenandoah Mountain, Shaw's Ridge, and Bullpasture Mountains.

The reward at the end was to spend the night on the battlefield of McDowell, on the 145th anniversary of the battle. On May 8th, I continued into McDowell. I was met by a fine southern gentleman, G. W. Obaugh, of the village, who gave me the tour of the town, pointing out buildings that have been there since the battle. G. W. invited me to his house, and gave me a .69 caliber musket ball. Mr. Obaugh was kind and gracious.
Later that day, Jim West, owner of Laurel Hill bed & breakfast, flagged me down. We had spoke the previous day along US highway 250. Jim invited Susan and me to stay at his place. After he assured me I wasn't imposing, we accepted his gracious offer.
The view form Laurel Hill.
Laurel Hill is set atop Monterey Mountain. The house is an old log cabin from Bedford County that Kim, labelled the pieces, disassembled, and moved to the mountain. Jim and his wife Lorraine raise highland cattle, a horse, and have a friendly dog. The house is charming, and maintains its historical integrity, yet has all the modern amenities. From the house, one gets a spectacular view down the valley towards Franklin. It is a breathtaking settings.

The scenery in this county is beautiful beyond description. The mountains tower above the road. Crab Run is a clear, stony creek that parallels the road from McDowell. The setting is simply sublime.
The people in this county are even more charming. Everyone I have met if friendly, kind, generous, and warm. As beautiful as the scenery is, the people are Highland's real treasure.
I am off towards Franklin today, having a short day of only 6 miles.
